  • Examination-led assessment
  • Open and laparoscopic options compared
  • Recovery and care-location clarity

When to consult

Hernia concerns a surgical review can explore

A bulge or abdominal-wall discomfort can have different causes. Examination helps determine whether a hernia is present, whether imaging is needed and what next step is suitable.

Groin, navel or abdominal bulge

A swelling that appears or changes with standing, coughing, lifting, exercise or other activity.

Pain, pressure or activity limitation

Discomfort around the groin, navel or abdominal wall that affects work, exercise or daily activities.

Incisional or recurrent hernia

A new bulge near an earlier abdominal operation or concerns after previous hernia repair.

Sudden or worsening symptoms

A very painful or firm bulge, vomiting or bowel-obstruction symptoms need urgent medical assessment rather than a routine appointment.

Consultation pathway

Examination before approach selection

The hernia type, symptoms, previous surgery and overall health guide whether observation, imaging or repair should be discussed.

  1. 01

    History & examination

Understand the bulge and its daily impact

Review the site, symptoms, triggers, earlier operations, occupation, medicines and other health conditions.
  2. 02

    Suitability assessment

Define the hernia and useful next tests

Clinical findings guide whether imaging is needed and whether observation or repair is reasonable to discuss.
  3. 03

    Shared surgical plan

    Compare the suitable repair options

If surgery is advised, open or laparoscopic repair, anaesthesia, alternatives, preparation and recovery are explained.

Individual planning

Open and laparoscopic are approaches, not automatic answers

The most suitable pathway depends on the hernia site and size, symptoms, earlier abdominal operations, recurrence, general health, anaesthetic considerations and individual priorities.

Laparoscopic repair may be useful in selected situations, while open repair may be more appropriate in others. The reason for the recommended approach, alternatives and expected recovery should be discussed before a decision is made.

Why choose SHIVA Uro & Gastro for hernia care

Examination-led planning, not a one-size-fits-all repair

Hernia type, symptoms, prior operations and overall health are considered before observation or a suitable surgical approach is discussed.

01

Define the hernia clearly

Clinical assessment guides whether imaging is needed and what the findings mean.

02

Compare suitable approaches

Open and laparoscopic options are considered according to the individual hernia and surgical history.

03

Plan recovery and location

Preparation, facility, expected recovery and follow-up are discussed before scheduling.

Common questions

Hernia consultation FAQs

These answers are general and cannot diagnose a hernia or determine which treatment or surgical approach is appropriate for an individual patient.

Browse all patient FAQs
Does every hernia need immediate surgery?

No. The recommendation depends on the hernia type, symptoms, examination, risk of complications, health conditions and individual circumstances.

Will I need a scan?

Some hernias can be assessed clinically. Imaging is selected when it can clarify the diagnosis, investigate another cause or help with surgical planning.

Is laparoscopic repair always better?

No single approach is best for everyone. The choice depends on the hernia, previous surgery, recurrence, surgical risk and the treating team’s recommendation.

When should urgent medical help be sought?

Seek urgent assessment for a suddenly painful or tender bulge, a bulge that no longer reduces, vomiting, abdominal swelling or difficulty passing stool or gas.
